I have connected an effector to the SEND/RETURN terminals, but I cannot create echoes with the fader. Why is this?

I know about connections with the SEND/RETURN terminals when using with the EFX-1000, what can I do by connecting this unit's MIDI OUT terminals with the MIDI IN terminals on the EFX-1000?
